Understanding Dementia
1-Day Course for Families & Informal Carers
When someone you love is living with dementia, it can be hard to know what is happening, what may help and how best to respond.
This course is designed for family members and informal carers who want clear, practical guidance from The Ness Care Group’s specialist dementia practitioners.
At The Ness, our experience has been built through years of specialist dementia support, working with people living with dementia and their families every day. Our training brings together up-to-date dementia knowledge, specialist insight and practical approaches that can help at home.
The course can be delivered face to face or online, making it accessible for families balancing care, work and other commitments.
You will gain practical insight into:
- What dementia is and how it can affect the brain
- How memory, communication, mood and behaviour may change
- Why anxiety, confusion or distress can happen
- Practical ways to communicate and respond with more confidence
- How to support the person you care for while also looking after your own wellbeing

Dementia – A Deep Dive
1-Day CPD Course for Health & Social Care Professionals
This advanced one-day CPD course goes beyond standard dementia awareness, giving health and social care professionals a deeper understanding of dementia, cognitive change and best-practice support.
Delivered by The Ness Care Group’s specialist dementia team, the course brings together clinical experience, current evidence and years of hands-on therapeutic dementia practice.
Through the day, you will:
- Explore the neurology and biology underpinning cognitive decline
- Understand the principles behind effective psychosocial dementia care
- Learn practical approaches for communication, distressed responses and behaviour as communication
By the end of the course, you will have stronger insight into dementia and its impact, with evidence-informed knowledge and practical strategies to strengthen your professional practice.
Successful completion contributes to your CPD and includes a certificate of attendance.
Bespoke Training
1-Day Course or Tailored Training Programme for Professional Teams
This training is for GP surgeries, care homes, care provider organisations, community teams and voluntary sector services supporting people living with dementia, memory loss or cognitive change.
Delivered by one of Devon’s leading specialist dementia teams, the training draws on clinical experience, current evidence and years of hands-on work in Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, dementia therapy, family support and community-based dementia care.
Before the course, we will talk with you about your setting, your team and the situations you want to improve. The training is then shaped around the areas most relevant to you, which may include dementia activities and therapies, communication, complex care, behaviour as communication, neurology, distressed responses and practical approaches for everyday support.
It can be delivered as a focused one-day session or as a tailored programme across several sessions.
By the end of the training, participants will:
- Understand the dementia-related challenges most relevant to their setting
- Gain practical approaches they can use with the people they support
- Feel more confident responding to distress, anxiety, withdrawal or changes in engagement
- Learn how activities and therapeutic approaches can support confidence, cognition and wellbeing
